A Boy Scout as a youth, Darold became actively involved in Troop 502 in La Caņada Flintridge, California, when his son Christopher joined the Troop upon completing Cub Scouts. He served for two years as the Committee Chairman of the Troop, and then was Scoutmaster for seven years. He remains an Assistant Scoutmaster.
He has previously served as the District Commissioner for the Rose Bowl District and as Council Commissioner of the San Gabriel Valley Council, BSA. He has also served on the Executive Board and Board of Directors of the Council, as well as on its audit, budget, and long-range planning committees.
Mr. Pieper has been honored to receive several major Scouting awards: Silver Beaver, Scoutmaster's Key, James E. West Fellow, Scoutmaster Award of Merit, Baden-Powell Award, District Award of Merit, Boy Scout Leader's Training Award, and the St. George Episcopal Award from the Boy Scouts of America and the Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church. Christopher left the Troop in 1999 as an Eagle Scout.
